Abdominal etching in Paris

Abdominal etching (or “abdominal sculpting”) is a high-definition liposculpture that reveals the abdominal muscles by suctioning the thin layer of fat that conceals them. In Paris, Dr Vincent Hunsinger uses it to draw out the “6-pack”, the Apollo’s V and the midline for an athletic, defined abdomen, in men as well as women. It is not a slimming procedure but a definition technique, reserved for people who are already lean and athletic.

01Well-defined abs thanks to abdominal etching

The body culture is now firmly established in France, and there is no counting the new fitness enthusiasts who swell the ranks of gym members each year. When training alone is not always enough to achieve the hoped-for results, surgery can come to the rescue of these perfectionists who want perfectly defined muscles.

So abdominal etching, originally from the United States, makes it possible to define the abdominal muscles and draw them out through liposculpture. This “abdominal sculpting” involves suctioning the excess abdominal fat located at the crossings of the rectus abdominis muscles. Liposculpture brings out the contours of the abdominal muscles, in particular drawing:

  • The “6-pack” or “washboard abs” over the rectus abdominis muscles.
  • The “Apollo’s V”, which corresponds to the sensual hollow at the hips where the oblique muscles intersect.
  • The vertical midline groove running along the abdominal wall from the navel to the sternum, known as the “linea alba”.

Abdominal etching, at first performed mostly in men, is increasingly chosen by women too who wish to tone their abdominal wall. This procedure gives better results in athletic patients whose excess abdominal fat is fairly limited (1 to 2 centimetres). It is not intended to slim you down but rather to achieve muscle reinforcement and a gain in tone, unlike a bodylift or liposuction.

Besides the abs, liposculpture can, for patients who wish it, redraw and prominently bring out the other main muscle groups: pectorals, biceps, triceps, thighs, quadriceps, buttocks, calves and so on.

02Who is abdominal etching for? Men and women

Abdominal etching is for people who are lean and athletic, whose abdominal wall is already well worked but whose contours remain hidden by a thin layer of fat (1 to 2 cm) that is resistant to exercise and dieting. The skin must be firm, with good retraction capacity; significant excess skin is better addressed by an abdominoplasty.

Long reserved for men, “abdominal sculpting” now appeals to women too: in their case, the result is drawn more softly and naturally — a fine midline and a slight lateral contour rather than a pronounced relief — for a toned abdomen without a “masculinising” effect. If desired, the same liposculpture technique can highlight other muscle groups (pectorals, arms, thighs, buttocks).

03Abdominal etching, liposuction or abdominoplasty: what’s the difference?

All three act on the abdomen but do not have the same goal:

  • liposuction removes the volume of fat to slim the figure;
  • abdominal etching does not aim to slim: it sculpts the superficial fat over the muscles to bring out their relief;
  • abdominoplasty removes excess skin (the apron) and tightens the muscles after a pregnancy or significant weight loss.

Abdominal etching is therefore the solution for profiles that are already lean and toned, whereas liposuction targets excess fat and abdominoplasty addresses loose skin.

05How the procedure works

01

Before the procedure

A precise consultation defines your expectations: the surgeon assesses the most resistant fat areas, the amount that can be suctioned and, above all, the quality and firmness of the skin (retraction capacity). A blood test and an anaesthesia consultation (no later than 48 hours beforehand) are scheduled, together with pre-operative photos. Stopping smoking and blood-thinning medication follows the usual guidelines.

02

During the procedure

The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis (discharge the same day), under general anaesthesia, and lasts about 2 hours. The surgeon draws with a marker the lines of the rectus abdominis muscles and the Apollo’s V — these are the reference points. After infiltrating an anti-bleeding product, they perform a liposculpture with a fine cannula: they suction the fat right up to each muscle insertion to bring the skin against the muscle and “etch” the contours. The micro-incisions are closed, then a cross-laced compressive moulding dressing and an abdominal compression garment are applied to press the skin onto the relief. It is this high-definition liposculpture technique (popularised by the Colombian surgeon Alfredo Hoyos) that sets etching apart from a simple liposuction.

After the procedure

Recovery is moderate: swelling, soreness and bruising for a few days, limited pain (mild painkillers), pinpoint scars that quickly fade. The compression dressing is removed around the 10th day, and the compression garment is worn for about 6 weeks. Time off work ~3 days, no heavy lifting for 2 weeks, return to sport at around 1 month. Prevention of phlebitis (compression stockings + anticoagulant for ~2 weeks) is put in place. The result takes shape at around 6 weeks and becomes permanent at around 6 months; it is maintained at a stable weight.

07Your questions

Who is abdominal etching for?+

For people who are lean and athletic, whose abs are already well worked but masked by a slight excess of fat (1 to 2 cm) resistant to exercise and dieting, with firm skin. It is suitable for men and women alike. It is not a weight-loss solution.

Is abdominal etching done in women too?+

Yes, more and more. In women, the result is deliberately drawn more softly and naturally (a fine midline, a slight lateral contour) for a toned abdomen without a masculinising effect. The indications (being lean, firm skin) remain the same.

What is the difference with abdominoplasty?+

Abdominoplasty removes excess skin (the apron) and tightens the muscles after pregnancy or weight loss. Abdominal etching does not remove skin and does not slim: it sculpts the superficial fat to reveal the muscles, in profiles that are already lean.

What is the difference with a standard liposuction?+

Liposuction removes volume of fat to slim the figure. Abdominal etching is a high-definition liposculpture that suctions selectively, right up to the muscle insertions, to etch the contours — the goal is definition, not reduction.

How much does abdominal etching cost in Paris?+

At the practice, expect in the region of €7,000 to €8,000 (see the price table below), depending on the extent of the sculpting and any associated areas. It is a cosmetic procedure, not covered by the French national health insurance; a detailed quote is provided at the consultation.

Is the procedure painful? What is recovery like?+

Recovery is moderate: swelling, soreness and bruising for a few days, limited pain (mild painkillers). The compression dressing is removed around the 10th day, and the compression garment is worn for ~6 weeks; time off work ~3 days, sport at around 1 month.

What are the risks of abdominal etching?+

It is a well-mastered procedure with minimal risks. The main one to prevent is phlebitis, limited by wearing compression stockings and taking an anticoagulant during the first two weeks. As with any liposculpture, minor surface irregularities are possible and can be corrected.

Is the result permanent?+

Yes. The result takes shape at around 6 weeks and becomes permanent at around 6 months, once the swelling has subsided. The suctioned fat cells do not return; a stable weight and a healthy lifestyle preserve the definition.

Can muscles other than the abs be sculpted?+

Yes: the same high-definition liposculpture can highlight the pectorals, arms, thighs or buttocks in athletic patients who wish it, in the same spirit of definition.

When is the final result visible?+

The relief appears gradually: clearly visible at around 6 weeks, it is permanent about 6 months after the procedure, once the tissues have settled and the skin has readjusted.
