Cryolipolysis (CoolSculpting) in Paris

Cryolipolysis (also called lipocryolysis, known under the CoolSculpting® and CoolTech® brands) eliminates localized fat bulges with cold, without surgery, without anaesthesia and without downtime. Exposed to intense cold, the fat cells self-destruct and are then naturally eliminated by the body — to reshape the belly, the love handles, the thighs or the double chin. In Paris, Dr Vincent Hunsinger offers it as a gentle alternative to liposuction for fat deposits resistant to exercise and dieting.

01What is cryolipolysis?

Cryolipolysis is a non-invasive aesthetic medicine technique that destroys localized fat deposits using cold. Its principle was developed by two researchers at Harvard University (R. Anderson and D. Manstein) from a curious observation: children who sucked on ice lollies lost a little fat in their cheeks. They deduced that the fat cell (adipocyte) is more sensitive to cold than the surrounding skin, nerves or muscles.

In practice, an applicator draws the bulge in by suction and cools it to around −10 °C for 40 to 60 minutes. The adipocytes crystallize, then trigger a natural process of self-destruction known as apoptosis. These destroyed cells are then gradually eliminated by the lymphatic system, over 6 to 12 weeks. A single session is considered to destroy around 20 to 25% of the fat in the treated area. Above all, the destroyed adipocytes do not regenerate: at a stable weight, the result is permanent.

02Which areas does cryolipolysis treat?

Cryolipolysis treats localized, « pinchable » fat deposits: the bulge must be graspable enough for the applicator. It does not make you lose weight and treats neither obesity, nor being overweight, nor established cellulite. Different applicators adapt to each area:

  • The belly: the abdominal spare tyre, the lower belly — the most requested area, with excellent results on stubborn bulges;
  • The love handles and the hips: to redefine the waistline;
  • The saddlebags (outer thighs), which are particularly resistant to exercise and dieting;
  • The inner thighs, the knees, the arms, the back (bra line) and the under-buttock folds;
  • in men, the chest and torso area;
  • on the face, the double chin and the jowls, with a dedicated applicator.

Areas treated by cryolipolysis — belly, love handles, thighs, double chin, in Paris

Belly cryolipolysis

This is the prime indication: belly cryolipolysis targets the abdominal spare tyre and the lower belly, those bulges that resist exercise and dieting. The waistline slims by a few centimetres, without surgery or scars, for a flatter belly — provided the abdominal wall is not slack (in which case an abdominoplasty is more appropriate).

Love handles and hips

Above the hips, the love handles are a common storage area, in men as in women. Cryolipolysis is highly effective there: by reducing these deposits with cold, it redefines the waistline and its junction with the hips, without liposuction.

Saddlebags and thighs

The saddlebags (outer thighs) and the inner thighs are among the most stubborn areas. Cryolipolysis slims them gradually and makes a good alternative to liposuction when the excess fat remains moderate and the skin is firm.

Double chin cryolipolysis

The double chin comes from a build-up of subcutaneous fat between the neck and the chin, which blurs the boundary between the two and weighs down the contour of the face. Over time, the weight of this fat also loosens the skin of the neck — which is why it is worth treating early. A CoolTech applicator hugs the area under the chin and, in 1 to 2 sessions, refines the contour and restores a sharper profile; results appear within 1 to 2 months. Double chin cryolipolysis is painless and has no downtime.

03Cryolipolysis or liposuction: which to choose?

Both techniques remove fat, but they do not play in the same league:

  • Cryolipolysis treats small bulges without surgery, without anaesthesia or time off, but with a limited (20-25% per session) and gradual effect, sometimes over several sessions;
  • Liposuction removes a far larger volume of fat in a single procedure, with an immediate result — but it is surgery, under anaesthesia, with a recovery period.

In practice, cryolipolysis is ideal for a specific bulge in a slim to normal-weight person; liposuction becomes the choice as soon as the volume to remove is significant or the skin is slack (which cryolipolysis does not tighten). The two approaches are complementary, never competing.

04How many sessions and what results to expect?

A single session per area is often enough; depending on the thickness of the bulge, 2 to 3 sessions spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart may be necessary. The result begins to show within the first month and becomes complete around 2 to 3 months, the time the body needs to eliminate the destroyed cells — drinking enough water supports this drainage.

The result is lasting and permanent since the destroyed adipocytes do not return — provided you maintain a stable weight: the remaining cells can still grow if you gain weight. A balanced lifestyle (diet, physical activity) therefore maintains the result. Cryolipolysis is not a treatment for cellulite: it acts on fat, not on the fibrous « orange-peel » appearance.

05CoolSculpting, CoolTech: the machine matters

Several medical devices exist: CoolSculpting® (Zeltiq, the original brand), CoolTech® or the Cristal Pro — all CE-marked and validated by clinical studies. What ensures safety and results is not so much the brand as the pairing of a certified device with a trained doctor, who sets the power, the applicator and the time according to your build. Beware of « low-cost » machines handled by non-medical practitioners: they give poor results, or even genuine complications. At the practice, cryolipolysis is performed on a certified medical device, after a diagnosis.

06Safety, contraindications and precautions

Cryolipolysis is painless and has no downtime: you resume your activities, sport included, immediately. The after-effects are limited to redness, bruising, temporary numbness or aching of the area, which disappear within a few days. There is a rare but recognized complication, paradoxical adipose hyperplasia: on the treated area, the fat may instead increase (more frequently in men), and then requires liposuction to be corrected — one more reason to choose a reliable device and an experienced doctor.

Cryolipolysis is not advised in cases of:

  • pregnancy or breastfeeding;
  • excess weight or obesity (it is intended for a normal BMI; beyond that, nutritional follow-up is more appropriate);
  • cold hypersensitivity: cold urticaria, Raynaud’s disease, cryoglobulinaemia;
  • circulatory or clotting disorders, particularly in the area;
  • a hernia, wound, inflammation or recent unhealed scar on the area to be treated.

The prior consultation allows the doctor to check your medical history and rule out these contraindications before any treatment.

07How the procedure works

01

Before the procedure

The session begins with a consultation that establishes a body assessment: measuring the skin fold, skin thickness, muscle volume and weight — data used to set the machine and to define the areas to treat and the number of sessions. No special preparation is needed: no anaesthesia, no stopping activity before or after. Cryolipolysis is intended for people with a normal BMI who have localized, pinchable fat deposits.

02

During the procedure

The area is marked out with a pen, then a gel-soaked protective cloth is applied to protect the skin from the cold. The doctor applies the suitable applicator, which draws the bulge in by suction and exposes it to intense cold (around −10 °C): the fat crystallizes. The procedure is virtually painless — a brief adjustment to the cold, sometimes a few tingling sensations. The session lasts from 1 hr 30 to 3 hrs depending on the number of areas (bring something to keep you occupied). At the end of the session, the area is massaged to « break up » the frozen cells and restart circulation, which kicks off their destruction and drainage.

Duration 1 hr 30 to 3 hrs Anaesthesia None
03

After the procedure

No downtime: you resume your activities immediately, sport included. A few temporary issues may appear (redness, bruising, numbness of the area, cramps, aching) and disappear within a few days. The result begins to show within the first month and becomes complete and permanent around 2 to 3 months, the time the body needs to eliminate the destroyed cells. A second session on the same area can be scheduled 6 to 8 weeks later to perfect the result.

09Your questions

What is the price of a cryolipolysis session in Paris?+

Expect around €600 per session (CoolTech), for one area. The number of sessions depends on the areas and the size of the bulges; the quote is drawn up at the consultation.

Does cryolipolysis really work?+

Yes, on the right indication: it destroys 20 to 25% of the fat in a localized bulge, permanently, with a result visible in 1 to 3 months. It is not a treatment for obesity or cellulite, but an effective solution for deposits resistant to exercise and dieting.

Is cryolipolysis dangerous?+

It is a safe and painless procedure when performed by a doctor with a certified device. The after-effects are limited to temporary redness or bruising. The only notable complication, which is rare, is paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (the fat increases instead of melting, especially in men); it is corrected with liposuction. A good indication and a reliable device prevent it.

Cryolipolysis or liposuction: which to choose?+

Cryolipolysis treats small bulges without surgery or downtime, but with a limited (20-25%) and gradual effect. Liposuction removes a far larger volume of fat in one go, but it is surgery under anaesthesia. The choice depends on the volume to treat and on your availability.

Which areas can be treated?+

The belly (spare tyre, love handles — the most effective area), the saddlebags, the thighs, the knees, the arms, the back, the under-buttock folds, as well as the double chin and the jowls with a dedicated applicator.

Does cryolipolysis make you lose weight?+

No: it dislodges localized bulges, it does not make you lose weight and treats neither obesity, nor being overweight, nor cellulite. It refines a body contour, on very specific deposits.

How many sessions are needed?+

Often a single session per area is enough; a second can be performed on the same area to perfect the result, spaced a few weeks apart.

Is cryolipolysis painful?+

No, it is painless: you feel the suction and then the cold, with a brief adjustment time and sometimes a few tingling sensations that fade quickly.

Can the double chin be treated with cryolipolysis?+

Yes: a dedicated CoolTech applicator treats the fat under the chin in 1 to 2 sessions, refining the contour of the face. Results appear within 1 to 2 months.

When do you see the result?+

The first effects are visible within the first month; the result is complete around 3 months, the time the body needs to eliminate the destroyed fat cells.

What are the contraindications?+

Pregnancy, excess weight or obesity, cold hypersensitivity (cold urticaria, Raynaud’s disease), circulatory disorders in the area, or unfinished healing from a recent procedure on the area.

Does cryolipolysis treat lipedema?+

No: lipedema is a disorder of fat distribution that does not respond to cryolipolysis. Its aesthetic management relies instead on a gentle liposuction (WAL technique), after medical advice.

Is cryolipolysis suitable for men?+

Yes: it is a frequent request among men, particularly on the belly, the love handles and the torso. Since the complication of paradoxical adipose hyperplasia is slightly more frequent in men, choosing a certified device and an experienced doctor is essential.
