01When is hymenoplasty considered?
Hymenoplasty is a plastic and reconstructive surgery procedure on the female intimate area that aims to reconstruct the hymen, the thin membrane located at the entrance of the vagina.
Although it is an elective, personal procedure, hymenoplasty often answers religious or traditional expectations. The bleeding caused by penetration on the wedding night is, according to certain customs, meant to attest to the “purity” of a woman presumed to be a virgin before marriage.
A torn hymen usually follows a first consensual sexual intercourse. It can, however, be entirely involuntary — for example during an accident while playing sport or through the use of tampons. It may also result from the trauma of a rape or a sexual assault. In such cases, hymenoplasty is often combined with psychological support.
This type of procedure may also concern women who, although still virgins, want to be absolutely certain that bleeding will occur during defloration. This bleeding does not in fact always happen naturally, depending on how flexible or elastic the hymen is. Ideally, the patient should make the decision to undergo hymenoplasty in consultation with her gynaecologist.

02What is hymenoplasty? The technique
The hymen is a thin membrane located at the entrance of the vagina. Hymenoplasty consists of reconstructing it from the woman’s own remnants (the remaining tissue left after the tear), which the surgeon brings together and sutures with fine threads. When these remnants are insufficient, a small flap of vaginal mucosa is used to recreate the membrane. The procedure restores the natural thinness and fragility of the hymen, which will be able to open again during intercourse.
Two important points: the threads stay in place — non-absorbable — for about 3 weeks, the time needed for healing (something to be aware of in case of ritual verification); and the result is long-lasting, with no effect on intercourse or on future childbirth. If you wish, the procedure can be carried out at the same time as a labiaplasty or another intimate procedure.

03Confidentiality and medical confidentiality
Discretion is at the heart of this approach. Your care is covered by the strictest medical confidentiality: no information is shared with third parties — including your family or your loved ones, even if they request it. Your file belongs to you. For confidentiality reasons, no before/after photographs are taken for this procedure.
One legal point worth noting: in France, a doctor cannot issue a “virginity certificate” (it is prohibited by law). Hymenoplasty itself, however, remains an authorised surgical procedure, freely chosen by an adult patient.
04How the procedure works
Before the procedure
The process begins with a confidential consultation: the surgeon examines the hymen, assesses the available remnants, explains the technique and answers your questions, without judgement and with a cooling-off period. The procedure is ideally scheduled a few weeks before the expected event (the threads remaining in place for around 3 weeks). The usual instructions are: stopping aspirin and anti-inflammatories, stopping smoking, and planning the procedure outside your period. No photographs are taken.
During the procedure
Hymenoplasty is a short procedure (30 to 40 minutes), performed as a day case, most often under local anaesthesia (possibly with sedation, spinal anaesthesia or general anaesthesia, depending on your preference). The surgeon brings together and sutures the remnants of the hymen (or fashions a mucosal flap if necessary) with fine threads. A light dressing is placed in a sanitary pad. You go home the same day.
After the procedure
Recovery is straightforward and largely painless (simple painkillers). Minimal bleeding may last 2 to 3 days; a sanitary pad is worn for the first few days and gentle intimate hygiene is recommended. The threads dissolve in about 3 weeks, after which there is no longer any visible trace. Sexual intercourse and sport can be resumed after these 3 weeks, once healing is complete. Discreet follow-up is provided.

06Your questions
Is hymenoplasty confidential?+
Yes, completely. Your care falls under the strictest medical confidentiality: no information is shared with anyone, including your family or your loved ones, even if they ask. Your file belongs to you alone, and no photographs are taken.
How much does a hymenoplasty cost in Paris?+
At the practice, expect €2,800 to €3,800 (see the price table below), depending on the type of anaesthesia and any associated procedures. Hymenoplasty is considered plastic surgery: it is not covered by the French national health insurance. A quote is given to you at the consultation.
How long before the event should the procedure take place?+
It is advisable to schedule the procedure at least 3 weeks before the expected date: this is the time needed for healing and for the threads to dissolve. Beyond this period, there is no longer any trace.
Does hymenoplasty leave any traces?+
No. After about 3 weeks — the time for the hymen to heal and the threads to dissolve — there is no visible trace of the procedure.
Is the procedure painful?+
No, it is performed under anaesthesia and recovery is largely painless, relieved by simple painkillers. Minimal bleeding for 2 to 3 days is normal.
Can it be felt during intercourse?+
No. The natural thinness of the hymen is preserved: the reconstructed membrane opens during intercourse, just like an intact hymen.
When can sexual intercourse and sport be resumed?+
After 3 weeks, once healing is complete and the threads have dissolved. Before this period, intercourse and sport are not advised.
Can hymenoplasty be performed long after the tear?+
Yes. As long as there are enough remnants, a simple suture is sufficient; if they are insufficient, the surgeon recreates the membrane using a vaginal mucosal flap. The procedure is possible at any adult age.
Can hymenoplasty be redone if it fails?+
Yes: a new procedure is possible, by simple suture if the remnants allow it, otherwise using a vaginal mucosal flap.
Does the surgeon issue a virginity certificate?+
No. In France, issuing a “virginity certificate” is prohibited by law, and no doctor may establish one. Hymenoplasty, on the other hand, is an authorised surgical procedure, freely chosen by an adult patient.
