01Labiaplasty (nymphoplasty) to treat labia minora hypertrophy
Intimate anatomy
In women, the vulva has visible parts (mons pubis, labia majora) but also internal, hidden parts (vagina, clitoris, vestibule and labia minora). While surgery of the external parts is well known (mons pubis (pubic) liposuction), labiaplasty is increasingly requested by patients who want to overcome this physical and psychological discomfort.
When is labiaplasty needed?
Labiaplasty can address various issues affecting the labia minora, also known as the nymphae:
- when the labia minora (inner lips) protrude beyond the labia majora (outer lips). We speak of true hypertrophy when the labia minora of the vulva exceed 4 centimetres.
- when this hypertrophy causes pain during sport.
when this excess tissue causes discomfort during intercourse (dyspareunia) and the labia minora tissue retracts and gets in the way during penetration. - in cases of discomfort when wearing clothing and underwear. Regular rubbing can then become painful.
- when the labia minora are not symmetrical (one lip is larger than the other). Even though this is a physiological and entirely natural state, it can create a complex in some women that labiaplasty can put an end to.

How does labia minora hypertrophy develop?
Labia minora hypertrophy can be congenital, meaning already present at birth, but it usually appears at puberty under the influence of hormonal changes (juvenile hypertrophy). It can also appear after one or more deliveries, or even following sexual intercourse.
New aesthetic and clothing standards are also a source of complexes that further increase the appeal of labiaplasty (pubic hair removal, the trend for thongs and high-cut swimwear, close-fitting sportswear, and so on).
02The techniques: free-edge resection or wedge resection
The principle is to remove the excess mucosa with no visible scar and no functional discomfort. Two reference techniques exist, chosen according to the excess to be corrected:
- Free-edge resection: a strip is removed along the free edge of the labium minus. The scar, longitudinal and internal, is very discreet; this approach can also treat the extension around the clitoris and reduce hyperpigmentation of the edge.
- Wedge resection (V-shaped / triangular): a wedge of mucosa is removed from the centre of the lip, then the edges are brought together. The scar, perpendicular to the edge, preserves the natural rim and the original pigmentation.
Neither one is superior: the choice depends on your anatomy and the look you want, and is decided together during the consultation. The sutures are absorbable (no stitches to remove).

03The results of labiaplasty
The result is visible immediately, but you need to wait for the swelling to subside and for healing to complete before fully appreciating it: allow about 2 months for a permanent result, with labia minora that have become fine and supple again and almost undetectable scars. Satisfaction is among the highest in plastic surgery, all the greater when the initial discomfort was significant: an end to discomfort during sport and in clothing, restored intimate comfort, and the complex resolved.
04Is labiaplasty covered by insurance?
At the practice, reduction labiaplasty ranges between €2,800 and €3,800 (see the price table below). Important point: when there is genuine functional discomfort (pain, discomfort during intercourse, during sport or in clothing), reduction labiaplasty is a recognised procedure that may qualify for partial coverage by the French national health insurance, without prior authorisation. The reimbursement base remains modest, however, and an additional fee applies; the details are explained and quoted to you during the consultation.
05How the procedure works
Before the procedure
A consultation allows the surgeon to examine the hypertrophy, listen to the discomfort experienced and explain the most suitable technique, with a cooling-off period. The usual instructions are given (stopping aspirin and anti-inflammatories, smoking), hair removal of the area is requested, and the procedure is scheduled outside your period. An anaesthesia consultation is also arranged.
During the procedure
The procedure lasts less than an hour and is most often performed on a day-case basis (you go home the same day). The anaesthesia is chosen with you: deep local anaesthesia with sedation, spinal anaesthesia or general anaesthesia. The surgeon performs the resection of the excess tissue (free-edge or wedge technique), then closes with absorbable sutures. If needed, the procedure can be combined with correction of the clitoral hood.
After the procedure
Recovery is straightforward but calls for a few intimate precautions. Minimal bleeding (like a period) and swelling are normal in the first few days; discomfort when walking can last from 24 hours to a few days. You gently wash the intimate area after each urination and wear loose cotton underwear for about 3 weeks. Return to work in 1 to 5 days, and to sport and sexual intercourse at around 1 month; swimming pools and baths are not advised for 3 weeks. Follow-up checks are scheduled until healing is complete.

07Your questions
How is labiaplasty performed?+
The procedure lasts less than an hour, on a day-case basis, under deep local anaesthesia (sedation), spinal anaesthesia or general anaesthesia. The surgeon removes the excess mucosa (free-edge or wedge technique) and closes with absorbable sutures. You go home the same day.
Is labiaplasty painful?+
No, the procedure is painless (under anaesthesia) and recovery is barely painful: some discomfort and a feeling of tightness in the first few days, well relieved by simple painkillers. Discomfort when walking fades within a few days.
How much does labiaplasty cost in Paris?+
At the practice, expect €2,800 to €3,800 (see the price table below), depending on the technique and the type of anaesthesia. Partial coverage is possible in cases of functional discomfort (see below); a detailed quote is provided during the consultation.
Can labiaplasty be reimbursed by the French national health insurance?+
Yes, partly, when it is justified by functional discomfort (pain, discomfort during intercourse, during sport, in clothing). Reduction labiaplasty is a recognised procedure, covered without prior authorisation, but on a modest reimbursement base: an additional fee remains payable by you. A purely aesthetic labiaplasty is not reimbursed.
Does labiaplasty change sensation?+
No. The reduction concerns the excess mucosa of the labia minora and preserves the sensitive areas (the clitoris and its hood). Sensation and pleasure are not reduced; on the contrary, many patients describe improved intimate comfort.
What is recovery like and how much time off is needed?+
Minimal bleeding (like a period) and swelling in the first few days, loose cotton underwear for about 3 weeks, and gentle intimate washing. Time off work of 1 to 5 days; sport and intercourse at around 1 month; swimming pools and baths not advised for 3 weeks.
When is the result permanent? Are the scars visible?+
The result becomes clearer over about 2 months, the time needed for the swelling to subside and for healing to complete. The scars are almost invisible, hidden on the edge or in a fold, and the labia minora regain their fineness and suppleness.
From what age can labiaplasty be performed?+
From the age of majority and once development is complete. Before 18, the procedure is only considered exceptionally, in cases of significant functional discomfort and with appropriate supervision.
Can the labia minora be reduced without surgery?+
For genuine hypertrophy, only surgery durably reduces the excess mucosa. Medical techniques (radiofrequency, laser) can improve the quality or pigmentation of the skin but cannot replace the reduction of a marked excess.
Can labiaplasty be performed after a pregnancy?+
Yes. You simply wait until you are well past the delivery and, where applicable, the end of breastfeeding, and outside any immediate pregnancy plans. The procedure has no impact on future pregnancies.
Does the procedure leave a natural result?+
Yes: the goal is a natural, harmonious appearance, never « over-corrected ». A rim of mucosa is preserved; the aim is not to remove everything but to restore discreet, comfortable proportions.
