01Arm lift: which arms is it for?
The skin on the inner side of the arm is thin and heavily used: over time or after weight loss, it loses its elasticity and sags (« bat wings »), making it awkward to wear short sleeves or undress. The laxity is sometimes congenital, but most often follows weight gain, skin ageing, a strict diet or bariatric surgery (bypass, sleeve, gastric band), where sagging skin is a common side effect. Women make up the vast majority of patients.
Depending on the body type, the arm lift takes two forms:
- moderate laxity with no excess fat → a simple lift, with a limited scar (in the armpit fold);
- thick arms with significant excess skin → a lift combined with liposuction, with a longer scar on the inner side of the arm.
Like the thigh lift (cruroplasty), the arm lift is not a slimming procedure: it tightens the tissues and improves the appearance of the arm. It may be covered by insurance when it follows bariatric surgery for morbid obesity (often as part of a bodylift).

02The scar: the real trade-off of the arm lift
Removing skin necessarily means a scar on the inner side of the arm — that is the trade-off to accept. Its length depends on how much excess needs correcting: short, hidden in the hollow of the armpit for mild laxity; vertical along the whole inner side (sometimes L- or T-shaped) when the excess is significant. Placed in a rarely exposed spot, it is only visible with the arms raised and fades within a year. If the skin is only slightly stretched, liposuction alone may be enough (young skin retracts); for moderate laxity, radiofrequency (Renuvion / Morpheus 8) tightens it scarless — but no non-surgical technique can remove genuine excess skin.
03How the procedure works
Before the procedure
Two consultations prepare for the procedure. The surgeon chooses the technique (a simple lift or one combined with liposuction) according to the body type and skin quality, and defines the location and length of the scar. Photographs are taken and the circumference of the arms is measured. An anaesthesia consultation takes place at the latest 48 hours beforehand, with the usual instructions: stopping smoking, stopping oral contraception and any medication that promotes bleeding (aspirin, anticoagulants) several weeks before.
During the procedure
The arm lift is performed on an outpatient basis (sometimes with one overnight stay if extensive liposuction is involved), lasts about 1 hr 30 min under general anaesthesia. After marking with a pen, the procedure is adapted to the excess:
- young, firm skin → liposuction alone may be enough, with the skin redraping naturally;
- minor excess skin → a short incision in the armpit fold;
- significant excess → an incision on the inner side of the arm, combined with liposuction, L- or T-shaped depending on the case.
The incisions are closed with absorbable sutures and a compressive dressing is applied (neither a drain nor a compression garment is usually needed).
After the procedure
Recovery is not very painful: swelling and bruising may appear without marked discomfort. You wear a compression sleeve for 2 to 3 weeks and compression stockings for one week (to prevent phlebitis); the dressings are changed over about ten days. A few days off work is enough for activities that do not strain the arms (otherwise 15 days), and sport can resume after 6 weeks. The scar must be kept out of the sun for a year and prolonged swimming should be avoided for 2 months. The result is visible from 15 days and permanent at 3-4 months; the scar becomes discreet after a year.

05Your questions
Is an arm lift painful?+
No, it is one of the least painful body-contouring surgeries: the discomfort is limited to swelling, bruising and tightness in the first few days, well controlled with simple painkillers.
What is an arm lift?+
It is the arm lift: a surgery that removes excess skin (and sometimes fat) from the inner side of the arm to tighten it. It corrects sagging or « hanging » arms, without causing weight loss.
How much does an arm lift cost in Paris?+
Expect around €5,000 to €7,000 for a purely aesthetic procedure. When the procedure is covered by insurance (following bariatric surgery), the out-of-pocket cost is limited to fee supplements (in the region of €2,800 to €4,000).
Is an arm lift covered by insurance?+
It may be when it follows massive weight loss after bariatric surgery (morbid obesity), subject to prior approval. For a purely aesthetic procedure, it is not covered.
Where is the scar and is it visible?+
On the inner side of the arm, sometimes limited to the hollow of the armpit. Placed in a rarely exposed spot, it is only visible with the arms raised and fades to become discreet after a year.
Is there a scarless arm lift?+
Not for genuine excess skin: removing skin requires a scar. However, if the skin is young and only slightly stretched, liposuction alone (which leaves only small dots) or radiofrequency (Renuvion, Morpheus 8) can tighten it without a scar.
Am I a good candidate?+
If your arms show skin laxity that exercise can no longer correct — often after weight loss or with age — and your weight is stable, an arm lift is indicated. The surgeon assesses the skin quality during the consultation.
What is recovery like?+
A compression sleeve for 2 to 3 weeks, a few days to 15 days off work depending on your activity, and a return to sport at 6 weeks. The scar must be protected from the sun for a year.
When is the result permanent?+
The arms are tightened from the procedure itself; the benefit is felt from 1 to 2 months, but the result refines over 6 to 12 months, as the swelling subsides and the scar matures (it remains slightly visible the first year before fading).
Arm lift or liposuction alone?+
If the excess is mainly fatty and the skin is of good quality (able to retract), liposuction alone is enough. As soon as there is genuine excess skin, only a lift (brachioplasty) can correct it.
