What does pubic liposuction involve?
The mons pubis is bounded by grooves in the lower abdomen and on the thighs. When it holds a fat deposit that is too thick, liposuction is the most effective solution to restore a harmonious shape. It allows the permanent removal of excess fat from this central part of the body. The stock of adipocytes (fat cells) becomes fixed at puberty, and removing a large share of the fat in this area prevents it from rebuilding.
02When is pubic liposuction the right choice?
The discomfort felt by some women is often accompanied by physical discomfort that, in certain cases, calls for reshaping of the pubis:
- when the mons pubis is too rounded,
- when the pubis droops over the labia majora,
- when the fat deposit hides the vulva,
- in cases of extreme weight loss that has caused excess skin in the pubic area. This is referred to as descent of the mons pubis. A pubic lift may then be offered in addition to the liposuction, with removal of the excess skin.
03Pubic liposuction in men
A « rounded » pubis is not only a female concern. In men, excess suprapubic fat (just above the penis) is common, resists exercise and gives the impression of a « buried » or shortened penis. Pubic liposuction in men removes this fat deposit through discreet micro-incisions: it frees the base of the penis and restores its apparent length, while rebalancing the lower abdomen. The procedure, identical in principle to the one performed in women, is readily combined with liposuction of the love handles for a consistent result.
04How the procedure works
Before the procedure
A clinical examination assesses, from the front and in profile, the volume of removable fat and above all the quality of the skin (its ability to retract) — this is what determines whether a simple liposuction or an associated pubic lift is needed. A blood test and an anaesthesia consultation (at the latest 48 h beforehand) are arranged. Smoking is stopped 1 month before, aspirin 2 weeks before, and the contraceptive pill the previous month; you must fast for 6 h before the procedure.
During the procedure
The procedure is quick (30 min to 1 h), performed as day surgery, under local anaesthesia, local anaesthesia with sedation or general anaesthesia (in particular if it is combined with another liposuction or a labiaplasty). After marking with a pen, the surgeon makes micro-incisions hidden in the natural folds, then suctions the fat with a fine cannula, in cross-hatched layers, for an even mons pubis. Depending on the case: a simple liposuction, a pubic lift with liposuction, or a pubic lift combined with an abdominoplasty. Absorbable sutures.
After the procedure
Recovery is mild: swelling and bruising that fade within about two weeks, low-level pain (painkillers if needed) and a short time off work. You wear a compression garment for a few weeks, avoid sport for ~1 month and protect the area from sun exposure for the first few months. The first effects are visible at around 3 weeks (once the bruising has resolved) and the result is final at around 3 to 6 months — long-lasting, because the removed fat cells do not regenerate (provided weight stays stable).
